Richard Henry is a lecturer in health and social care at North Herts College. He is also a Stevenage Borough councillor, where he is a member of the cabinet and holds the Environment and eGovernment portfolio.

Richard has a degree in social policy and administration, and became a professional Social Worker in 1987. He also has qualifications in mental health, community care and recently gained a post graduate teaching certificate. He is currently a non-executive director of East and North Herts Primary Care Trust.

He has wide work experience, having worked in a factory and in road haulage. He has been a social worker, locally and in London, and was a local government officer with Hertfordshire County Council. He was a school governor for eight years, three of them as chair and runs a charity for people with disabilities.

He has been a union member for 33 years, currently a member of UNISON and UCU, and has experience as a union steward and convenor.

His wife, Jackie, is a manager within the NHS. She is also a Stevenage Borough councillor and they have two children.

In 2005 Richard was the Labour candidate for the Hertford and Stortford constituency. On 15 September 2007 he was selected by a large majority at a meeting of Labour Party members to be the Parliamentary Spokesperson to fight the next general election.
