Although the General Election is extremely important, 2024 is a big year in politics for NE Hertfordshire in other ways.

Much of North East Herts Constituency lies within the area of North Hertfordshire District Council (“NHDC”). In 2024, we have the first ‘all out’ election for decades. This means that whereas, previously, 1/3 of council wards were elected every four years, this year, NHDC is changing to elect every ward every four years. So that means every voter who lives in NHDC will have the chance to vote on 2 May 2024.

At the moment, Labour, led by Elizabeth Dennis, has 19 NHDC councillors, with the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives holding 15 seats each. Although Labour has the largest number of seats of any party, that is not sufficient to control NHDC and therefore, since 2019, Labour has governed in coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

It is our aim for Labour to take control of NHDC following the 2 May elections, but equally, it is very important for Labour to maintain the seats that we have and we are not taking anything for granted. We have to fight for every vote.

Currently, we are working on Labour’s manifesto and this is in the advanced stages of development. We are looking forward to launching our NHDC manifesto in in March 2024. Working in Local Government is very challenging at the moment, with severe funding strictures imposed by Central Government. However, that does not mean that our Labour NHDC group lacks ambition and we are excited about the proposals that are being discussed.

Watch this space for our Labour manifesto and above all VOTE LABOUR ON 2 MAY!!!
